I was running a workshop in LA for a massive tech company when I invited one of the VPs to deliver a short pitch to the group. I could tell he was nervous—he wasn’t keen on doing it, but he agreed to give it a shot.

He delivered the pitch beautifully, but I knew it could be even better. As the room applauded, I asked him to stay on his feet. “That was great,” I said, “You nailed it, and we all agree you hit the mark. But I’m going to ask you to try something, because I know you’re capable of it. If it doesn’t work, it’s on me, not you. Are you all okay with that?” The group agreed, and I coached him to try delivering the pitch in a completely different way—just for fun.

He went for it, and this time, he knocked it out of the park. The applause and energy in the room were electric. Everyone, including the VP, saw the power of what he had just delivered.

What Happened?

  • I took the risk and owned the outcome.
  • I removed the pressure by telling the VP it was just for fun.
  • I reassured him he was good enough, satisfying his ego.
  • Finally, I got the group’s buy-in, and they supported him.

By removing the pressure and making it fun, we all learned a valuable lesson—risk-taking can lead to powerful breakthroughs.

The Point: Take the risk, own the outcome, and remove the pressure by making it fun.

Practical Tip:
Next time you’re coaching or leading a pitch, consider how you can set the stage for risk-taking. Remove the pressure and focus on the potential for growth rather than perfection. By supporting others in stepping out of their comfort zone, you create an environment where the best results can emerge.

These stories highlight how creating a positive, supportive environment can drastically improve performance. By focusing on people’s strengths, reducing pressure, and encouraging risk-taking, you set the stage for success.
